[Boatanchors] Globe Scout 40A

I've recently recapped the power supply for a nice 40A which appears to be
the identical circuitry as used in the early Globe Scout 65. Everything
works
nicely on CW but on phone the teeny-tiny broadcast-band variable (365pf)
used in the plate tuning section of the pi-network arcs over on modulation.
I really don't see how this thing would ever work properly on AM with such a
close-spaced variable so I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with the
40A or 65 on phone? I also note that with the HV 'on' but with the
transmitter unkeyed, speaking into the microphone also causes arcing at the
same spot so it appears unrelated to RF and just AF voltage. Unfortunately
there is no extra room to replace the plate capacitor with a larger,
wider-spaced one. Has anyone used one of these on AM?
