I'd suggest doing some research on the "Starfish shot".

It was quite a bit more than flatulence.

Took out power and phones in Hawaii, with an air burst out toward Bikini 
and Kwajelein. [sic]

I too remember the time frame in the '50s when the Aurora was *very* 
visible on the western suburbs of Chicago.
