Thank you all for your good suggestions on this project.
I have done complete power supply replacements for 
AC/DC portables in the past with good results, 
but in this case I didn't want to "stray" so far 
from the original design.
Trying to "second-guess" the engineers is, IMHO,
an easily-acquired bad habit in our hobby.  
When I've succumbed to it, it's not long 
before I have yet another "Frankenradio."  
Think I'll just accept that I can't cover everything 
that might happen to a battery filament string.
Some wise advice from Bill, KU8H:

   "No matter what we do there is always the possibility 
    of multiple fail-safes to actually fail and destroy 
    those fragile filaments. 
    Pick one or two that fit your agenda and put them in place. 
   Then move on to the next project. 
    Enjoy your gear while you still have it. 
    Sooner or later (hopefully much later) 
    Murphy is going to get it...."
