Fred,
The phone output is capacitively coupled from the plate of a 6SC7 triode
with a 220 Kohm load resistor, so I'm pretty certain they had a "2000
ohm DC-resistance" headset in mind.
A "2000 ohm" headset actually has an impedance of something in the
neighborhood of 10-12 K, while with a "600 ohm" headset, your talking
about an AC impedance, so the difference is greater than it appears.
Take an ohmmeter to the headset in question, and multiply by 10 for
approximate impedance.
