Jim,

Did you get a real R390 with lots of cans in the IF deck?
or the R390A flavor with mechanical filter in a square box
on the IF deck.

Does it have both meters?

Do you have a name tag on the front?

Has the power supply been solid stated yet?

If it is an R390/A did some one explain about the
blocking cap in the IF deck that keeps B+ from getting
into the mechanical filters and toasting the filters.

If it is an A did some one explain the black beauty sorry caps
in the IF and RF deck to you. They were OK but they only
last about 50 years and most are over due.

The R390 caps came before cheep cost reduction R390/A
black or brown beauties so the R390 receivers do not have this problem.

No big deal it only takes a good Saturday to replace them all.
A once per receiver in a life time operation.
And its a chance to refreshed your soldering skills.

Do join the R390 reflector next door to this reflector

Find the R390A.net page with lots of reference stuff.

If you have an R390 get TM 11-5820-357-35
If you have the A flavor then get TM 11-5820-358-35 also.

If you have the A then you will still want both manuals.

They are at R390A.net

Some where on the site is a long inspection list.
It will walk you through everything.

On a good day it took about 4 hours to do the list for
a semi annual preventive maintenance process.

Could take a lot longer to do it your first time
as you will want to do a bunch of one time cleaning
that you will never allow your receiver to get to such
a state again.

Also find the Y2K manual.
It comes in parts.
If you only have a dial up connection it is the way to get
an excellent modern year 2000 rewrite and update of the TM.
A lot of R390 Fellows put a lot of work into generating the manual.
Their names are in the front of it and you will recognize them in your
R390 e mails.

We have a lot of R390 owners who read the reflector but do not
jump in with mail. There choice. But know we are here and look
for help from the reflector and the web site when they have a maintenance
problem. All of the readers do not have high speed connections.
Thus the Y2K manual in parts is a real support for them.

Subject: [Boatanchors] R390 group

I just acquired a R-390 and did a search on Google for a strong R-390 group.
Found two, one seems to have died in the 1990's and the other one around
2004-005.
Anyone know of an active group?
