Good job, Larry!  Yes the audio chain in a Viking II is very marginal.

I just rebuilt my Viking II audio chain using a Hammond A124 that i bought from Mouser for $27.  I also reworked the whole audio chain up to the 807 inputs which is where the A124 transformer hooks to.  I redrilled the holes where the 6AU6 tubes were and put in 9 pin sockets for a 12AX7 and 12BH7 driving the A-124 transformer.  All new components.  Audio reports are excellent with lots of audio to go.  The circuit came from July 1954 QST, Hinks and Kinks page 39.

Took some time but well worth it.
