The white stuff is really nasty - I have been told it is bacterial buildup
feasting on the organics in the plastic (yuck). I struggled with this on
my NC-300 knobs until I came across this technique on restoration board.
Use an automatic dishwashing tablet - I used the sold form (like Cascade)
not the gel packs- dissolved in a quart of very hot water. Let them soak
for 10 or so minutes and then use a nylon bristle part cleaning brush and a
lot of q-tips the clean the crud out of the crevices. It is important you
get every bit of the white crud out of all parts of the knob- even
undersides. Once the stuff is gone, rinse with clean thoroughly and let
dry. I followed this up by a coat and polish of automotive wax to protect
the surface of the knob form further deterioration. I did this on my
NC-300 3 years ago and they still look great now.
