[Boatanchors] LORAN A Revisited

LORAN A used to be the nemisis of 160 meter operation here at one time. New
Orleans was in a sector of the coast where NO operation was allowed on 160
meters at all.
The sound is quite familiar but a bit "softer" in sound than I remember.
Gee it has been maybe 60 years sine I heard that sound!

After the LORAN A went QRT and LORAN C became popular on 100 khz. it was
used a lot by helicopters to fund oil drilling platforms in the Gulf of
Mexico, until the serious advent of GPS, which torpedoed all the other
navigation systems which paled in comparison.

Subject: [Boatanchors] LORAN A Revisited

Hi All,

A while back there was a thread in this forum starting with GPS interference
from LightSquared, progressing to LORAN A, and culminating in wistful
recollections of the sound of LORAN A as heard in a radio receiver. As we
know, the LORAN A system in the US went dark over 30 years ago. One forum
participant expressed a wish that he had a recording of LORAN A so heard.

I have found an audio clip of a simulation of the sound of LORAN-A. It has
the "flanging" characteristic of a channel having 2 stations of differing
pulse repetition rates. Even though the timbre is a little off (probably
from ringing in the IFT's of the various tube radios I used back in the day)
from the way I remember it, it is still quite good. Here it is for your
edification and enjoyment.
