Thanks for sharing your recollections about that era of aircraft comms, 
Sandy.   While researching the article I wrote for Electric Radio about 
the Heath HT-4 light aircraft transmitter a while back, I came across a 
really nicely done video that shows a modern reconstruction of a four 
course radio range.   While the modern version operates on 28 MHz 
instead of LF,  as the video explains, the technology is the same - and 
works as well as it ever did.

Reaching back into "the dustbin of history", here's a rare chance to 
hear what it was like to fly the radio range in the 1940s:

For anyone who was flying in that era, the actual flight around the 
pattern at the end of the video should bring back memories, Despite the 
capabilities (and our level of dependence!) on GPS, it's worth 
remembering how this very simple navigation aid worked, and how it made 
cross-country flight possible.
