There seems to be less in QST to appeal to me, too, than there used to be. I just can't get very enthused about the plethora of digital modes, or PC programs or SDRs. Its probably only appropriate to the times that QST contains so much material that blurs radio into computing and the internet. But I get all of the computing and internet I desire (or can stand) at work or my computer, without radio. I need my radio-ing to be something different.

I think QST tries to provide both very basic info for the newbies as well as deeper projects for the would-be-engineers & real engineers. I suspect that "way back then" it was expected that a lot of the basic stuff would be gotten from the Handbook and Elmers, so the magazine focused on other things. QST's vintage radio column is one of the first things I look for now. When my Electric Radio issue comes, I read just about everything from cover to cover.

Oh well, the old spark fans were hacked off when everyone wanted to switch over to those wimpy little continuous wave valve transmitters!? And the migration from CW to phone. And then AM to SSB. (heh)

I've never understood the rationale behind this...more space for ad revenue
??...room for one more article on "How To Build a Dipole" ? I know several
VE7's that have dropped their subscriptions because of this very thing. One
of the best issues of QST was always the annual Sweepstake summary, listing
all winners equipment / antennas as well as photos. At one time it was
almost always a HB transmitter of sorts and a commercial receiver.....How
did they lose their way so badly?
