I guess the ARRL and the manufacturers lobbied the FCC to ease up on  the 
tests to increase the market place. IMHO, they should go back to the early  
amateur exams where you had a code test and much more technical questions to  
weed out the appliance operators we have today.  I'd be willing to bet that 
 many of them couldn't draw a block diagram of a simple ham station much 
less a  diagram of a simple transmitter or receiver.
 
I realize that the marine and military have given up on CW but my favorite  
question when the subject comes up is:  You are out in the boonies and your 
 only communication is your ham rig.  You have an emergency situation and  
your mic cable is broken. What are you gonna do, Charlie?  You had better  
hope that you know the code and that the guy on the other end does, too!

Sorry to say, relatively few of the current crop of  so-called "amateur 
radio operators" have any idea what a Wouff Hong is, or a  rettysnitch, or an 
elmer... they live in a world where "negatory" and  "seventy-thirds" and "the 
personal here is..." and "your signal is nine  over"  >>
