David,

Yes, I suspected that.  Originally they used carbon microphones and the 
overhead speaker.  I was forced to "tolerate" that *one* time.  I had to 
have a check ride by the Senior Instructor prior to taking my FAA check 
ride.  That was how HE did it.

The old goat couldn't hear squat!  Gee, I wonder why?  LOL!
