I never had an FT-736R but wonder if the knob is like some of the later 
models where the rubber grip is like a big fat rubber band which must be 
stretched by prying under an edge with something dull (so you don't gouge 
the rubber) and pulled off to expose a hole for a set screw which you loosen 
to remove the knob.
