Listmates,

Want to take a fun trip back in time? Get QST's from the year you were licensed to get reminded of the "way it was." I found QST's for 1954, the year I was licensed as WNØYVA.

1. Every issue had something you could build and there were plenty of ad's for parts.

2. The SX-88 is introduced. Who had $500 for a receiver?

3. The Johnson Ranger becomes available. $180, kit.

4. Here is some of the other rigs you could buy ...

Globe Scout ($100), Globe King ($500), 75A-3 ($530), KW-1 ($3850), Viking II ($279), SX-71($250), NC-183D ($383), 20A ($250) to name a few ... and ... the Heath AT-1 ($29.50) Finally ... something we could afford!

I know you remember all of these, but how about these ...

Elenco 400-T3 Transmitter ($700), Lettine 240 Transmitter ($80), Babcock Mobile Xmtr ($100), Sonar SRT-120 ($160)

5. Imagine a DXpedition to Clipperton dragging along an HT-20 and SX-88.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing with my ICOM 7700 (and someday I'll actually figure out what ALL the controls are for) but there is nothing as much fun as finding and operating (and repairing) any of the vintage equipment.

73, Bob
