[Boatanchors] RME 69 Crystal Filter and Cc/C adjust

Thanks Sandy... This one is all original except for outboard recap of
electrolytics from square can. And a few micas... Very nice shape and very
good - no excellent - mechanically.. Seems to work pretty well, except
maybe a little deaf. I am in the tube testing and clean up phase - coming
out nicely - and will then do a complete realignment. I am puzzled by these
two things though and needing some guru to step up .. Your comments on the
crystal filter are very helpful.

Also the CW BFO oscillator, or maybe it is the injection oscillator, is
unstable mechanically and I have not run that down yet....Could be a tube..
Is this typical... pretty susceptible to warbling when tapped on - even
lightly. ???

I am a Collins guy at heart, but this will run with a 1934 era Collins
transmitter back when Art was not making receivers.

Thanks again.

Ah ha! You have discovered one of the quirks of the RME-69!

The RME-69 crystal filter does not work the same as later ones....like in
the HRO series and other receivers. After you play with it a while it will
become apparent (to a great extent) how to use it. As far as I know there
isn't a "notch" function like most of the later ones! I does work great on
CW once you figure it out! I traded off mine years ago and had a lot of fun
with it. It would be nice to find one in better mechanical shape than the
one I had! The capacitor "vernier" controls were very worn mechanically and
sloppy. It had to be recapped and a lot of resistors were way out of
tolerance. If it had been in better mechanical shape I would have kept
it. Worked great for it's "vintage"! Instruction manual is a real hodge
podge. Describes some things well and very vague on other things. NO PANEL
control markings makes it rather puzzling to use without a "crutch" drawing
of what knob does what, etc. Hope you get yours sorted out.

I am doing my first alignment of a RME 69 receiver.

I am having trouble reading the schematic in the area of the crystal filter
but there is apparently some confusing info.

There is not much in the manual about the switch positions for the filter
selector switch. In the alignment section it refers to the middle position
of the switch as the "Series" mode position.....fine.

That implies that there is a "Parallel" mode position... ??? Maybe.

There appear to be three positions of the switch.. 10:00, 12:00 (Series)
and 2:00. But, in the schematic there appear to be only two positions and
it is not clear what the wiring is in each position, or which position it is
shown in..

I want to understand this guy before I leap in.

Also, anyone out there have any words of wisdom for setting the C and C(c)
capacitors that appear to be a "factory Setting on Band one, but "Should be
kept to an absolute minimum, so as not to degrade the upper bands.

75 years later, I am not sure I trust the "factory" settings for C and Cc,
which could have shifted or been messed with along the way.

Any .... HELP ! is appreciated.

Bill
