Bill, I use a webber 5Y3 replacement in my 75A-3. Never used one in a
transmitter. It works FB in the A-3. I realized I could have used a
socket plug and wired up diodes, calculated the v.d. resistor and
added that with a thermistor but since I don't do that regularly it
would have taken me a few hours of ineptitude and $10 or $15 in parts.
Since I have limited time and plenty of projects for things that no
one is making I spent the twenty bucks and got the webber and moved
on. Now, in the A-3 the webber gets plenty hot too, but not hot
enough to boil water like a 5Y3. The p.s. iron still heats up but not
as much because the tube isn't next to it cooking it. If your Ranger
tube rectifiers are not so close to anything that the heat they throw
off will bake another part I would continue to use them.
