[Boatanchors] LETTERING ON WRINKLE PAINT

I just looked at several pictures of the HBR receiver series from the 50s 
and 60s and several were finished in black wrinkle/crackle paint with 
beautiful white lettering.  I tried water slide letters on my last project 
but they did not work well at all. I'm no artist so I would never attempt 
painting the letters.  I have contemplated placing the letters on smooth 
metal plates and then fixing the plates to the panel after scraping away the 
wrinkle paint.  Does anyone have other methods I might try?
