A master could have more than 2 salves. Loran C was primarily for water
navigation but pilots adopted it and had enough clout to demand the Coast
Guard install an inland chain in the center of the US so they could be used
in aircraft navigation and close the gap.
It was an expensive proposition with the master up near NW Kansas or
Southern Nebraska. Slaves were added from the Texas gulf coast to Southeast
Louisiana to over somewhere in Arizona and up to near Montana, and there
were 5 slaves to the master. A couple of the slaves did dual purpose to 2
masters as I recall.
