First, get the free Microsoft Security Essentials from Microsoft.com 
that works on ALL MS operating systems from XP and later. It updates 
itself regularly. 
 
AND, there is a totally free version of MalwareBytes Anti-Malware 
that is available from the maker. 
 
Google both of these to find the free versions for download. 
 
A computer pro of my acquaintance says these two are really all that 
you need. 
 
My experience with Avast was that it slowed my computer badly but 
that AVG wasn't quite as bad. 
 
If you are a member of the milsurplus group, you may want to post 
this info to that list. I bailed on that one due to the amount of 
daily message traffic that was overwhelming.
