Hi Ed,

I understand your disappointment and frustration. However, posting comments
about or details of this unfortunate event on this list is just asking for
problems.

I am asking all of you who want to respond to Ed's situation to send your
comments directly to him. Please do NOT post them on this list! It only
results in arguments, insults and the like.

Ed, please contact me direct. Contact information is in the off list message
I just sent to you.

I wonder if it would not be better to pay the person doing the repairs, or
restoration, half of the agreed upon price up front and the remainder upon
completion? Doing so might discourage the less then honest from getting
involved in the first place

Maybe we need a sort of "Angie's List" for radio parts suppliers, new and
used, and those doing repair work and/or restorations. The problem there is,
just who do we trust to fairly and honestly evaluate the parts being sold
and the repair/restoration work being offered?

One way might be to do an in depth search of the various vintage radio
archives for names and results. You can search many boatanchor related lists
from the Hallicrafters web site, AKA HHI - Halligan's Hallicrafters
International. To the best of my knowledge, these archives go back as far as
1997. The search criteria is reasonable specific, or broad, the selectivity
is up to the user. For instance, you can search by model, such as SX-117 or
S-38C, or more broadly by searching for S-38 ... You can also use a phrase,
such as "dial cord" or "dial calibration" etc.

There are tens of thousands of posts stored in each archive! So try
different combinations or key words or phrases. You are more then likely
going to find some helpful information!

I have tried for many years to encourage various Hams or radio devotees to
take one particular list, such as Boatanchors, and edit all the technical
posts. Remove all the dialogue that is not related to the original question
etc. The result would be a fantastic Q/A guide that contained many
resolutions to a wide variety of issues, parts sources, restoration people,
electrical restoration and cosmetic restoration etc. But to date, nobody has
volunteered to do such a project. The final results could be burned to CDS
and made available for a "reasonable" price plus postage.
