When I was one of those (a small child, I hope not a doofus) I had just 
learned how to draw a star so I practiced my craft on the pick guard of 
my dad's Martin O-18.  Thank God for two things: 1. It was the pick 
guard; 2. My Dad was tolerant of the foolishness of small children.

My son has the guitar now, decorations and all.
