A 2N3055 or other suitable NPN, a 30-32V zener and a resistor will also work in the battery replacement application.

The LM317 data sheet also shows how to use a large NPN pass transistor
in a complementary connection with a small PNP transistor. NPN power
transistors are much more common in junk boxes and TV salvage, etc,
in my experience.
