A diode alone does lengthen the release time, how long would depend n  
a number of factors including inductance value of the coil, flux  
density, spring tension on the relay arm, etc.  A resistor in series  
with the diode will speed up release, start out with 50 - 100 ohms and  
cut and try from there.
