[Boatanchors] UHF Connector Questions

Hi,

I've been asked some archane questions about the UHF connectors:

First: What is the history of the numbering system. It looks something
like this, I think:

Amphenol       UHF
Signal Corps   SO-239 & PL-259
Military       UG-xxx

Can you fill in, please.

Second: Is there a Metric thread version of the connectors, and is it
fully intermatable? Are the connectors on rice boxes metric?

Third: Does anyone know if SO-238 is a good part number, and are there
other SO/PL numbers for other fittings?

Fourth: Most importantly, does anyone have a link to the dimensions/specs
for SO-239s?
