Thanks John and Walt.  Yes it was a "duh" moment once it was explained
to me.  I had some idea the secondary filaments windings were seriesed
with the hot line in and used as a voltage dropping wire resistor sort
of--obviously very wrong.

that antique radio forum looked kind of interesting -- I wish I had
more time to read it.
