[Boatanchors] Replacement Part Query

You might consider a small drive chain as a replacement.  The ones 
available from hobby stores for R/C models, for example.  Sprockets to 
fit 1/4" shafts are readily available.  You could even use the chain on 
the existing "wheels" by providing some additional side-supports of 
plastic or metal that keep the chain from slipping off the "wheel".   
With care, backlash could be minimized.  Since this is not a 
frequency-determining part of the transmitter, some looseness could be 
tolerated.   Using a stiff tension spring to couple the ends of the 
chain could go a long way here.  An internet search for "drive chain" 
turned up several possibilities.
