[Boatanchors] Hallicrafters SX-42 - Restore or Parts?

Todd is right. It is not an easy set to restore. However, it is somewhat easier than the SX-28 or SP-600. To put it another way, I was able to restore one with good results and, God knows, I don't have the skills of most of the guys on this list. It's not something you can do in an evening but it is a fun project because the end result is so good.
The main difficulty is reaching the resistors and caps in the RF section. With a little patience and ingenuity, however, most can be reached. The side panel is easily removable, which helps considerably.
If the output transformer is fried, all is not lost. You have options: (1) have it rewound; (2) use a modern replacement, such as the ones sold by Hammond; or (3) find a good one from another SX-42, an SX-62 or any other Hallicrafters rig that used push-pull 6V6s.
