David:

The SX-42 is a wonderful set and, in my opinion, well worth saving and restoring. It was Hallicrafters' top-of-the-line receiver right after the war and replaced the venerable SX-28 in that spot. It has the added benefit of FM. The audio is simply wonderful. Its versatility makes it a wonderful receiver for a den, study or workshop because you can can quality reception of the BCB, the SW bands and FM.

Here's the link to Phil Nelson's article on his restoration of an SX-42:

If you decide to restore it, replace the filter caps and all the caps in the audio section before you fire it up. Leaky audio caps have the nasty habit of taking out the audio transformer.

    Good luck!

>I just picked-up a (heavy!) Hallicrafters SX-42 receiver

>It was obviously left where a fine mist of water could hit

>also need a complete re-finish.  It has the original round S-meter,

>Chassis looks pretty fair with the only significant rust spots
>on the right vertical support member and on the transformer shield.
>I've certainly seen worse sets recovered.
>The very complexity of this set will make it a big project.
>I'm not a Hallicrafters person.  I don't know if an SX-42 is
>considered
>worth recovery or if I should "part it out" to help other sets.
>Advice, please?
