Might  "work" in the sense that you'll hear something but won't  
provide the required negative bias voltages.  Quick and dirty, would  
recommend stacking up 5 AA cells to give you -7.5 volts bias for the  
1D8 grid and the AVC circuits.  Single 9 volt battery might work OK too.
