      Its a military receiver, the dial escutcheons have 
been repainted and the knobs are a much later generic type. 
Note that the band switch knob is gone, the skirt of the 
original has the band designations on it. There are plenty 
of photos of the original receiver on the web.
      The military receivers had mostly black panels, either 
smooth or crinkle depending on who built them, but some were 
gray. The four holes above the audio gain control were for a 
label, found on military receivers, the domestic variety had 
the Hammarlund name engraved on the panel.
     I saw a 40mhz version at a local swap meet on Sunday 
but passed it up because it had been very heavily modified: 
original audio amp gone and a power supply and single-ended 
amp installed in its place.  Maybe good for parts. The only 
worth while mod is to add a voltage regulator to the local 
oscillator, easily done and fits under the chassis. Keeps 
the frequency from changing with RF gain.
