500kc was the International distress and calling frequency
for CW. We guarded 500kc observing the silent periods of 15
to 18 minutes and 45 to 48 minutes after the hour as marked
on the radio room clocks. This period was for all stations to
listen for SOS traffic. 500 was also used to call other stations
and move them to 400kc freqs to pass traffic.
500kc and the adjacent 400kc frequencies were a big deal
and usually pretty active at night with maritime traffic of one
kind or another.
2182kc was the voice (AM) counter part frequency with exactly
the same format as 500. Silent periods were to listen for any
MayDay calls. 73

500 kc was (is?) the emergency radiomarine frequency; KPH ran rigs up
to 40 KW and that frequency was used for ocean going vessels declaring
an emergency.
