Maybe I should have rephrased the question a little differently. The
subject had nothing to do with modeling or scaling, but with 
measurement. I was referring to a situation where, for example, a 
certain length would be measured, and written down as, something like 
7/18" of an inch.

The closest I have found, but doesn't quite fit the bill, is that
in typography, a point is close to 1/72 of an inch, and 1 pica is equal 
to 12 points, or about 1/6th of an inch. But even here, measurements are 
not written down as inches, but in points or picas.
