Kurt,
The number 38 is a coincidence. 38 years ago I was part of a tour group at
Fermi National Accelerator Lab. I had just started working for a company
known back in those days as Addressograph-Multigraph Corporation, an office
machine OEM with manufacturing facilities in Schaumburg. The company housed
us at The Sheraton O'Hare Hotel while we participated in their training
programs. My first stint at the hotel was in the summer of 1974 for a
period of 6 weeks. Spending that much time living in a hotel exposed us to
the hotel staff quite a bit. Our group of technicians was befriended by a
hotel bellboy (at least that is what I recall as his position)who was
probably in his 20's also. This bellboy was a friend of a Fermi employee
who was responsible for maintenance of the large magnet assemblies used in
the accelerator. Our group of about ten people was given a personal tour
with that employee as our guide. As a young man of 23 I was impressed by
the scope of responsibility that man had at such a unusual place. I have
some 35 mm slides of some of the equipment there. To this day when I look
at those pictures they look like something out of a science fiction movie.
That tour gave us a great sense of pride in what our country was capable of
accomplishing. My recollection was that quarks were the big topic of the
day at Fermi Lab at that time.
Thanks for the comment about Fermi Lab in this thread. It allowed my to
reminisce about an enjoyable event in my life.
By the way the man who gave the tour was African-American if I remember
correctly. That might help you identify who our guide was.

Spent 38 years at the Fermi National Accelerator Lab. Fantastic place to
visit if you are ever in the area.
