There are so many penetrating oils on the market its
hard to know which, if any, work best. I strongly suspect
there is not really much difference among them. WD-40 seems
to be a combination of Kerosene and light oil, not a good
lubricant and in my experience, only a fair penetrating oil.
I find Liquid Wrench works better. I also have PB Blaster
and agree about the odor but it seems to work. I think at
least some of these products must contain a reducing agent;
that is something that reverses oxidation, but I have no
specific information. They may also have something in them
to make them "wick".
The MSDS for these products will tell you a little
something about their composition but MSDS are not required
to show non-hazardous ingredients or even hazardous ones if
present in very small amounts.
FWIW, Diesel fuel is close to Kerosene.
