A correction:
     I was evidently wrong about 73 and 88 originating in 
the Philips Code. It appears that they are probably older. 
There were several numerical abbreviations in Morse. I can't 
find the list at the moment but will search it out. 73 and 
30 at least probably date from the 1850s.
     I also stated that Walter Philips was with Western 
Union, again wrong;  he was with the Associated Press and 
later was a vice-president of the United Press.  He was in 
inventor and was responsible for some repeater designs used 
for wire telegraphy.  I think there is a pretty good 
biography on the web, a Google search will find it.
