     There was a Hoffman Radio Company in Los Angeles. They 
made radios right after WW-2 but are known mostly for TV 
sets. I don't think this was the same outfit.  This set, 
whether commercial or home-brew looks like late 1930s from 
the types of tubes and general layout.  It is tantalizingly 
familiar looking.  If it home-brew the builder also made his 
own dials since the dial does not appear to be any of the 
commercial types available. The chassis could, of course, 
have been adapted from something else but the stamped bottom 
plate is beyond home builders. It also appears that it was 
in a cabinet of some sort which is missing.
