[Boatanchors] replacement diodes

My 52 year old Hammarlund HX 500 may need the balanced modulator diodes replaced. I am having carrier problems on USB and LSB. The original diodes, still installed, are 1N634 diodes.

Have any of you substituted replaced 1N634 diodes with replacement diodes of another number and vintage? If so, what do you recommend and what was your result?
