The primary advantage of the Collins receivers, 51J's and 390/390A, is
that they can be set to a desired frequency within a couple of Khz.
This is not the case with receivers with tunable first conversion
oscillators like the SP-600, especially on the higher frequencies.
However, you could cheat by adding a modern digital frequency display
that counts the oscillators, and subtracts out the IF frequency.
Otherwise, the performance is nearly equal. Neither is really good on
SSB without modifications. The SP-600 is easier to work on in both the
electronic and mechanical sense, and sounds better on high quality AM
signals.
