Hi,
Taking a break from building work benches/shelves I poked into one of
the boxes of junque. I have a Kenwood external VFO I had forgotten
about. One of the 5.000 to 5.500 mc units. And I have the cable that
used to plug into the big rice box. I have started rounding up parts for
the heterodyne VFO project inspired by the Hallicrafters HA5. The 5 to
5.5 mc VFO in that unit is going to be the fussiest part to build.
Meanwhile I will use the Kwood unit and plug it into a box with the xtal
oscillators, the mixer, the output, and the keying circuits. Then I can
get on the air with the old boat anchors while I get a VFO tamed. I'll
leave room in the box for the VFO when I get it working right (no
noticeable drift). I'll feel a lot better about the signal on the air
with the Ranger, DX-100, DX-60, HW-16, T-60, etc. Presently the signals
wander around a bit and I have only a couple of xtals.

Bill KU8H
