[Boatanchors] Parts - was RS rant

My experience with UPS (I live in the Dallas area) echoes Glen's, which is why I use FEDEX exclusively.  If you have a FEDEX account (easy to open) you get 15% of their normal rates.  FEDEX is cheaper than the USPS for anything over about 2 pounds plus you get automatic tracking and cheap insurance.

You do NOT live in this area!  UPS does have major problems with the Mesquite, Texas, hub due, to a large part, with labor in a management versus union situation.  Large boxes, if not physically destroyed, are shaken so bad that hardware comes loose, parts are dislodged, etc.  There are problems with hubs in other areas of the country.

Small boxes routinely come through crushed, torn, etc., even those weighing under a pound!  For every undamaged box that I received delivered by UPS I would get 4 or 5 severely damaged boxes.  I have even received parts shipments from Mouser in which the box was opened, certain "high dollar" parts removed, and then the box was resealed with UPS tape!  Mouser is aware of this and always has replaced the parts without any problems.  Also, Mouser, according to the telephone representatives, has had boxes opened and then the contents replaced with things completely different from what was shipped.  In one case the parts were removed and were replaced with "scratch off" cards from the Texas Lottery!

Mouser is aware of the problems with the Mesquite hub and normally uses boxes 2 or 3 times as large as usual and put in additional packing material.  The parts make it fine, but the boxes are basically destroyed!

UPS was having so many claims for damaged shipments that they actually installed signs at the company owned stations stating that EVERY shipment will be opened and inspected for "proper packing".  By doing this, UPS legally take responsibility for the packing.  However, when the package is received damaged they still try the "improper packing" ruse to keep from paying the claim.  However, when one "mentions" the signs the UPS representative will rapidly change the subject and will usually pay the claim immediately.  But, if you do not mention the signs then UPS will do everything possible to keep from paying.

The drivers are NOT the problem, at least in my neighborhood.  All of the drivers that come to my house are courteous, offer to bring large parcels into the house, etc.  The damage happens before the boxes are put on the truck or when the boxes are put on the truck by hub employees.

If you have no problems with UPS then, in my opinion, are lucky because my experience, and that of a lot of others in different parts of the country, are not as satisfactory.

Until about 5-years ago I used UPS exclusively for shipments to and from.  This went on for well over 30-years.  Then, things changed and more and more shipments to and from me started getting damaged.  After fighting with UPS for claim damages time after time, I finally stopped using UPS and suggest that anyone shipping anything to me not to use UPS>

Glen, you have been harping about that UPS hub for decades, how about giving it a rest.

Ive been sending and receiving small to large packages thru there with no problems, not even dented cartons.
