I needed some Hammertone paint for a project I am working on and went to buy
some the other day at The Home Depot. They had both a light gray and also a
pretty dark gray Hammertone. The light gray is a pretty standard looking
Hammertone. I bought the darker one and it is DARK but Hammertone gray. I
found it to not give much of a Hammertone look unless you really "pile it
on" and make the surface look "wet". I was building a power supply for a
Heathkit VF-1 VFO, so the type finish I wound up with was relatively
unimportant. I used an amount that could have been applied to a greater
amount for a more pronounced Hammertone effect. By not doing this, and just
using a mild application I produced a slight Hammertone effect but subdued.
This was OK for my application. In fact, it looks very nice. This is the
first time I used this fairly dark gray Hammertone paint. The bottom line
is, a thinner coat vs a heavy coat of this paint will give entirely
different looks. I like Hammertone paint as it hides a lot of
irregularities. When you use it, make sure the quantity applied is the same
thoughout (even coat)or you will wind up with different appearances from
one area to the next.
