[Boatanchors] Slug-tuned inductors

I bought an Eico 722 VFO awhile ago.  Output seemed low, so was going to adjust the output coils.  The slugs seem stuck.  Is there a reliable way of unsticking these without damaging the coil?  The coils are a 26uH and 7uH.  Are replacements available from any source?
