Bottom line
The band is open to the other side of the world
The greatest mic you will ever hear is the raspy tin can used by the poor
guy
with an all home brew station answering your CQ.
After all, he is rare DX.
Thanx

There is another factor called proximity effect.
Most directional microphones, cardioid, bi-directional, etc., will
exhibit an emphasized bass response when the source of sound is close.
The E-V 664 and other older E-V microphones use a different method of
obtaining the cardioid pattern from other manufacturers. This almost
eliminates the bass boost for close-in sounds.
While guest lecturing at a college class in advanced recording
techniques, I demonstrate the effect by using a Shure SM-57 and an E-V
664A. The difference with close talking is very obvious. The E-V still
sounds natural when I speak close to the grill while the Shure sounds
"boomy" and intelligibility suffers.
I would expect the Heil microphones to suffer from the same proximity
effect as the Shure.
