You're confusing a simple "whatzit?" posting, Dave, with a link to a
page of items offered for auction.

It's never been a question of learning about things via posted ebay
links. It has always been taboo to post your own links as well as
links for others that have no particular interest beyond being
radio-related.

It involves the basic issue of cluttering up the lists with free ebay
ads like the newsgroups were famous for, particularly since we're all
more than capable of searching ebay for ourselves.

Not a fine line, really. More a case of self control, which the vast
majority seem to possess. Perhaps the original poster could've
accomplished the same discussion by simply asking about the seller by
his ID rather than posting a link to all his wares. In this case, the
listings are for one of ebay's well-known (by most) bottom feeders. He
just received a lot of free advertising, as did the billion+ dollar
business. Not a big deal in the bigger picture, but certainly nothing
to do with "petty envies" either. That's the argument used over the
years by the few who feel the lists should be open to ebay and other
spam(as in 'unwanted') ads, since it benefits them.
