There are two additional problems. The unwanted lower sideband single tone signal is attenuated, but still present. The carrier is suppressed, but still strong enough to hear. Those 2 cannot be eliminated just by keeping the level down. Then, if you increase the tone level (turn up the gain) then the 2nd, and sometimes the 3rd, harmonic of the tone are present and those add even more signals.
Unfortunately, the same thing happens with sound card modes applied to one sideband or the other. That is, the unwanted sideband is still present as well as the suppressed carrier. Running these modes at a very low level (i.e. 10 watts or less) keeps the unwanted signals down to a reasonable level.

Part of the problem when running the 32S1 on CW is if you crank up the tone too high you create intermod products which are heard as additional signals. Keeping the drive low helps.
