One thing the Royal 1000, 3000, and 7000 series all have in common is very long battery life. I really like my Grundig Satellit 700 but it will exhaust either rechargeable or alkaline cells in under 24 hours while the Zeniths will run several hundred hours on a set of batteries. My solid state TOs spend a lot of time on the gazebo during the summertime.

I have most of the tube type Zenith TO models and a Royal 3000 was my first SS receiver. I later picked up a Royal 7000 and it is a very nice radio. Last year I found a mint final edition R-7000-2 at a small fest for $50 and a Royal 1000 for $10. Although it is supposed to break fairly easily the handle that turns into the rod antenna (models 1000 and 3000) is a cool feature. The Royal 1000 was the early SS version and does not have FM coverage. The Royal 2000 is low cost/low performance and really doesn't fit with the rest of the family.

This has been an inspiring email thread. I am not heading out to the gazebo with a cold German beer and my Royal 3000 :)

Hi Carl,

Your right the Zenith Royal 7000 is a really great radio. I enjoy mine very
much!

I bought it about 10 years ago for $50.00. And no it's NOT for sale. I have
had it currently listening to the local NDB and everytime
you turn it on it is still on frequency. Probably been there for at least
6 months or more. I have a few others including a couple of the leather
cased ones. One has cleaned up very well the other will not be as good.

Hope you find a 7000 at a reasonable price!
