Boy, does that bring back memories. I used both of the OS-8s. First on
the destroyer in the 50's. Then on the radar picket ship in the early
60's where it was used with the R-390's in combo with the URC-32
transmitter. We tuned the receiver for a lissajous pattern on the scope
which confirmed that we were locked in to the data signals on LSB while
we transmitted voice to the USAF NORAD station at OTIS AFB for any
necessary tuning needed or to get a ROGER on the sent data.
Those were enjoyable times in Navy.

: Navy electronics changed gray shades around 1950.
: The original OS-8/U
: http://www.navy-radio.com/test/os8b-u-94.jpg
: is much darker than the later OS-8C/U

:
: I like Rust-Oleum Light Machine Gray for the lighter 50's-60's Navy
radio gear
: In this photo,
: http://www.navy-radio.com/misc/shack/shack-pan27.JPG
: the bottom TTY unit was painted with Light Machine Gray - the other
: TTY units are original Navy colors.
:
: Rust-Oleum Smoke Gray works well for the late 40's darker gray color.
: In this photo

: I painted the racks with Smoke Gray and the equipment is original
: (some of it yet-to-be-cleaned nicotine brown)
:
: Neither is a perfect match and a lot depends on the lighting, but
: these seem to be pretty close.
