What do you mean that the 680 was not  "not well engineered"?  I believe 
if you pick up any copy of the ARRL Handbook from the period, you will 
find the circuits that were in the 680.  Unlike today, the manufacturers 
were trying to sell products as inexpensively as possible given "good 
engineering practice" as defined by the FCC.

In 1957 simple circuits that made it possible for newly minted General 
and Conditional license holders to get on the air with AM of any sort 
was the goal.  Funny thing is most people want "original" manuals for 
equipment when they can go to the Handbook to find the same circuits 
that are used in period equipment.  Most of it was engineered to meet 
FCC technical specifications and at a price a guy with a paper route 
could afford.  After all it isn't Collins so why re-engineer?  If you 
want something better, homebrew it.
