If U want a GOOD solid-state portable Heathkit SW radio, look for a
Mohican (model number GC-1/A) at a hamfest. They show up pretty often even now
(bet I've seen at least a dozen in the $75-$125 price range in the last
year.......but I go to a lot of hamfests). They are superior both
mechanically and electrically to the GR-78. They work pretty well on SSB and CW,
better than the couple of GR-78s I've played with. I imagine Heath was
under the gun cost-wise when the GR-78 was being designed and brought to
market. It's dual-conversion on the top band or two..........and the first IF
was done pretty cheaply. Ever wonder where that oddball first IF frequency
came from ? Look at the frequency on the 2nd LO oscillator crystal.
It's a 3.58 MHz TV color burst crystal.
