Great report Larry -
The TTY lines all went through patch panels like the ones shown at
http://www.navy-radio.com/rtty-patch.htm
There would be banks of the 6-line panels like this -
http://www.navy-radio.com/ships/sherman-01.jpg
or on larger ships banks of the 24-line panels like this one
http://www.navy-radio.com/ships/bb62/p1010047.jpg
They'd be wired up so that with few patch cords were needed for normal
operation, something like this -
Line 1 - RTTY converter output to a Crypto unit input
Line 2 - Crypto unit output to TTY reperf
Line 3 - TTY TD to Crypto unit input
Line 4 - Crypto unit output to RTTY keyer
etc.
But if a unit needed to be replaced for maintenance or patched to some
other destination, you could easily do that with one or two cords.
A small ship system diagram is shown here -

SB-1203 and SB-1210 are the TTY patch panels. You can also see how the
rcvr audio and xntr control/audio were run through switchboards so
that anything could be connected to anything.

...... Did all machines in the main receiver room terminate at one
patch panel bay or were they wired direct to another machine somewhere
else on the ship? Lots a questions on this. Come on you Navy ET's.
